Button-down shirts were first worn in the late 19th century by British polo players, who started fixing the collar of their shirts so that when riding and hitting, the collar did not flutter in the player's line of vision. It did not take long for sporting goods manufacturers to pick up on this trend and offer shirts to the masses whose collars were fixed with a button.
In the 50s and 60s, the button down shirt continued to develop, combined with a tie, and began to be seen in the business world as well as continuing to be worn at less formal occasions
This 1957 Button Down Shirt uses a classic cut of the 50s.
